The supplementary volume Venezia e Napoli was ready for publication around 1840 but was withdrawn by Liszt at the proof stage, with a later set discarding two pieces, revising two, and adding a new one.

Composer Biography

Liszt mentored the young Italian composer-pianist Giovanni Sgambati (1841-1914) in Rome in the early 1860s, even composing a short coda for one of Sgambati's performances.

Composition History

Most pieces in Liszt's Années de Pèlerinage were conceived during his travels in the 1830s with Marie d'Agoult, a period of intense compositional activity.

The two books of Années de Pèlerinage were prepared for publication in their final form by the early 1850s, during Liszt's busiest period as a composer/conductor at the court of Weimar.

While the first book of Années de Pèlerinage was inspired by the landscape of Switzerland, the second book, 'Italie', draws entirely upon Italian art and literature.
