Richard Goode and Mitsuko Uchida, current Artistic Directors of Marlboro Music since 2000, credit their summers at Marlboro as young artists as among their most important influences.

The concerts featured on this album were hand-selected by the artistic directors at Marlboro Music from recorded archives spanning decades.

Historical Context

The Marlboro Music School & Festival has gathered distinguished musicians and exceptional young artists for seven weeks each summer since 1951 on the campus of Marlboro College in southern Vermont.

Cultural Impact

Vocal chamber music from Marlboro was first introduced to a wider public with 1961 recordings on Columbia Records (now Sony Classical) of Brahms' Liebeslieder Waltzes and Schubert's Shepherd on the Rock.

Interpretation

While later performances of Shostakovich's Songs on Hebrew Folk Themes at Marlboro have been sung in Russian, the 1967 recording on this album features the German edition available at the time.
