Prokofiev's 'war sonatas,' including Sonata No. 7, were influenced by his grief over the loss of close friends Vsevolod Meyerhold and Zinaida Raikh under Stalin's brutal reign.

The album's title, "Love and Death," was inspired by the piece "El Amor y la Muerte" from Granados's Goyescas, which forms the album's centerpiece.

Enrique Granados performed his piano suite Goyescas for President Woodrow Wilson on March 7, 1916, shortly before his tragic death.
