Performer Biography

David Oistrakh began studying violin and viola at age five with Pyotr Stolyarsky, and made his debut concert at age six in 1914.

Composition History

Beethoven's Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 61, was finished just in time for its first performance on December 23, 1806, leaving the soloist, Franz Clement, to play much of it at sight.

Recording & Production

The Triple Concerto was recorded in London on May 4, 1958, while the Violin Concerto was recorded in Paris from November 8-10, 1958.

Performer Biography

David Oistrakh taught at the Moscow Conservatory from 1934, becoming a professor in 1939, and his students included Oleg Kagan and Gidon Kremer.

From 1940 to 1963, David Oistrakh performed extensively in a trio with cellist Sviatoslav Knushevitsky and pianist Lev Oborin, sometimes called the 'Oistrakh Trio'.

During World War II, David Oistrakh remained in the Soviet Union, performing for soldiers and factory workers under difficult conditions, and was awarded the Stalin Prize in 1942.
