Edward MacDowell, an American pianist-composer, received his initial musical training from Colombian, Cuban, and Venezuelan musicians, including the renowned pianist Teresa Carreño.

MacDowell's later years were tragically marked by mental illness, and his death in 1908 may have been due to excessive use of potassium bromide, then used to treat insomnia.
Composer's Artistic Vision
MacDowell's inspiration stemmed from German romanticism, both poetic (Goethe, Heine) and musical (Mendelssohn, Schumann, Brahms), combined with a fondness for Nordic sagas and the Celtic Revival.
