Mariss Jansons, the conductor on this album, was born in Riga in 1943, the son of conductor Arvīds Jansons, and studied violin, piano, and conducting.

Gustav Mahler's fondness for marches stemmed from his childhood in Iglau (now Jihlava, Czech Republic), where an infantry regiment and military band were stationed.

Performer Biography

Mariss Jansons served as Chief Conductor of the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks (Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra) from 2003 until his death in 2019.

Composer's Artistic Vision

Mahler discovered profound expressive potential in march music, using it to convey everything from the brightest to the darkest moments of life, including the horrors of war in his soldier songs.
