Malipiero's Tenth Symphony, 'Atropo' (1967), is dedicated to the memory of conductor Hermann Scherchen, who collapsed and died immediately after conducting Malipiero's opera L'Orfeide.

Malipiero's Ninth Symphony, 'dell'ahimè' (1966), includes the word 'AHIMÈ' (alas) printed twice in huge bold capital letters in the score, giving the symphony its subtitle.
