Rachmaninoff dedicated his early Pieces for Cello and Piano, Op. 2, to his fellow student and cellist Anatoliy Brandukov, with whom he premiered the work in 1892.

Rachmaninoff's Romances Op. 38, including 'Daisies' and 'The Dream' on this album, were written after the sudden death of his colleague Scriabin, whose modernism Rachmaninoff had previously rejected.
