Nikolay Medtner, a Moscow-born composer of German ancestry, studied piano with his mother before entering the Moscow Conservatory at age twelve.

Medtner graduated from the Moscow Conservatory in 1900 with a Gold Medal in piano, but chose to dedicate himself to composition rather than a career as a concert pianist.

Medtner's Sonata-Triad, Op. 11, was inspired by Goethe's poem "Aussöhnung" (Reconciliation), which reflected Medtner's own romantic dilemma concerning Anna Bratenskaya, who was married to his elder brother.
