Meredith Monk composed 'Totentanz' for her 2006 work impermanence, a full evening piece reflecting on the ephemerality of life, created in response to the sudden death of her partner, Mieke van Hoek.

The Games: a science fiction opera, from which several pieces on this album are taken, was created by Meredith Monk and Ping Chong in response to the political climate of West Berlin in 1983, with missiles pointed from the East and the Berlin Wall still standing.
