Mendelssohn's composition teacher, Carl Friedrich Zelter, declared him a journeyman in the brotherhood of J. S. Bach, Haydn, and Mozart on his 15th birthday in 1824.

Mendelssohn rewrote the piano part of his Piano Trio in D minor, Op. 49, to update its figurations after his friend Ferdinand Hiller suggested it sounded 'old-fashioned'.
