The young Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy met eminent musicians like Weber, Paganini, Spontini, and Spohr, and the poet Goethe was among his ardent supporters.

Mendelssohn later regarded his youthful works with increasing contempt, and it was largely due to his sister Fanny that they were preserved in the Prussian State Library.
