Composer Biography

Mieczysław Vainberg, a young piano virtuoso, fled his native Poland after the German attack in 1939 and was received in the Soviet Union, where he studied composition.

Compositional Technique

Vainberg's Violin Concerto, Op. 67, is a formally large work with four movements where the highly virtuosic solo part is played almost continuously throughout the piece.

Composer Biography

Nikolay Myaskovsky, a doyen of Soviet symphonism, was born in 1881 near Warsaw and began his career in the army before studying music in St Petersburg with Prokofiev.

Recording & Production

This recording was made in Studio 5 of the Moscow State Broadcasting and Recording House in Russia, from February 27th to March 5th, 2003.

Instruments

Ilya Grubert, the violinist on this recording, plays a 1740 violin by Pietro Guarnieri of Venice, which was formerly owned by the famous violinist Henryk Wieniawski.
