After being dismissed from the Gonzaga court in 1612, Monteverdi was triumphantly appointed maestro di cappella at the basilica of San Marco in Venice in 1613, where he remained for the rest of his life.
Composition History
The Ballo delle ingrate was commissioned by the Duchess of Mantua in 1608 for the wedding of Francesco Gonzaga and Margherita of Savoy, a dynastic marriage intended to resolve territorial disputes.
Compositional Technique
In Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda, Monteverdi makes particular use of the stile concitato, which expresses agitation or anger through quickly repeated notes, and also employs pizzicato (plucked strings).
