At seventeen, Monteverdi was advertised on the title-page of the Canzonette as being from Cremona and a pupil of Marc'Antonio Ingegneri.

Monteverdi's first published compositions, sacred music in the spirit of the Council of Trent reforms, appeared in 1582.
