Composition History

Hummel's chamber arrangements of seven of Mozart's piano concertos, including those on this album, were commissioned by English publishers and completed in 1836, a year before Hummel's death.

Interpretation

Hummel's arrangements include his own ornamentation and coloration, fully exploiting the piano's capabilities, in line with the 18th-century practice of individual coloration.

Composer Biography

Johann Nepomuk Hummel, who arranged the works on this album, was a pre-eminent piano talent and received two years of free tuition from Mozart, living in his home.

Compositional Technique

Hummel's arrangements for this album feature a mixed trio accompaniment, with the piano part being so comprehensive that it could be performed solo, while the flute, violin, and cello play subordinate roles.

Historical Context

Mozart's widow, Constanze von Nissen, described herself as a 'foster-mother' to Hummel and favored his talent over her own sons.

Performer Biography

Fumiko Shiraga, the pianist on this album, has won worldwide acclaim for her 'Piano concertos in disguise' series for BIS, which includes recordings of Chopin and Beethoven concertos in chamber versions.
