Mozart: Symphonies, Vol. 9
Did you know?
1/7Compositional Technique
Mozart deliberately used musical effects to engage his audience, such as a sudden forte after a soft opening, knowing it would elicit a strong reaction.
Composer Biography
Mozart's 1777-78 concert tour through Europe, which included a stay in Paris, was marked by personal tragedy when his mother, who accompanied him, fell ill and died.
Historical Context
In the 18th century, scholarly treatises were written about the emotions that individual keys could evoke, though there was no universal agreement on these associations.
Performer Biography
Adam Fischer, the conductor on this album, co-founded the Haydn Festival Eisenstadt and the Austro-Hungarian Haydn Orchestra in 1987, with whom he recorded all of Joseph Haydn's symphonies.
Historical Context
During Mozart's time in Paris in 1778, audiences would clap and even hiss during movements, and it was not uncommon to repeat a successful movement if 'da capo' was shouted.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Mozart, even at age twelve, understood the practical challenges of different keys for various instruments and consciously or unconsciously built his own system for evoking emotions through them.
Recording & Production
This album is part of a larger project by Adam Fischer and the Danish National Chamber Orchestra to record all of Mozart's opere serie and collected symphonies.
