Compositional Technique

Mozart never again wrote a concerto finale in sonata form after his first violin concerto (K207) and first piano concerto (K175) both had their sonata-form finales replaced with rondos.

Mozart was a highly accomplished violinist, but surviving correspondence suggests it was not his favored instrument.

Historical Context

Mozart's Salzburg compositions for orchestra and soloist are almost exclusively for a single soloist because the provincial court orchestra had few capable soloists.

Mozart was more comfortable with the viola, playing it in string quartets with Haydn and composing some of his most personal works for it.

Composition History

All five of Mozart's violin concertos were written in Salzburg while he was in the service of Archbishop Colloredo, and may have been intended for Antonio Brunetti, the leader of the Salzburg orchestra.

Compositional Technique

Mozart's concerto style was crucially influenced by opera, with the operatic aria's range of emotions and virtuosity paralleling solo instrument and orchestra.
