Performer Biography

Benjamin Schmid, the violinist on Jörgen Dafgård's Tandem, plays the 'ex-Viotti' Stradivarius of 1718, which is on loan from the Österreichische Nationalbank.

Recording & Production

All three concertos on this album were recorded at Malmö Live, an events venue in Malmö, Sweden, which opened in 2015.

Compositional Technique

Joseph Phibbs' Concerto for Bass Clarinet and Orchestra breaks with the traditional three-movement concerto form, instead being set in four movements, aligning it more closely to a symphonic structure.

Instruments

Carl-Johan Stjernström, the bass clarinettist, plays a Henri Selmer Privilege 'Black Edition' bass clarinet, which he describes as having a smooth velvety action and warm tone.

This album is unique as it is probably the first of its kind to feature three solo concertos written for bass clarinet and orchestra.

Compositional Technique

Geoffrey Gordon's Prometheus for bass clarinet and orchestra is based on Franz Kafka's short story 'Prometheus', following its text and architecture, and is considered by the composer to be a symphony.
