Performer Biography
Sanae Yoshida, the pianist on this album, is a founding member of Ensemble Temporum, a Norwegian ensemble for contemporary music, and the pianist of Ensemble Ernst.
Interpretation
The pianist, Sanae Yoshida, took lessons in piano tuning to be able to detune pianos herself, after being fascinated by Gerard Grisey's 'Vortex Temporum'.
Recording & Production
The album was recorded in two locations: Sofienberg Church, Oslo, in August 2020, and Lindemannsalen, The Norwegian Academy of Music, Oslo, in June 2022.
Compositional Technique
The album features various microtonal techniques, including detuning piano strings, using string harmonics/preparations, and other microtonal modes of playing.
Interpretation
The performer, Sanae Yoshida, commissioned all the solo works on this album during her artistic research fellowship at the Norwegian Academy of Music.
