Eduard Nápravník, a figurehead of Russia's concert life, was born in the Czech lands in 1839.

Nápravník was a self-critical composer, fearing he would copy music he admired, but his own voice remained clearly recognizable in his 200 works.

Historical Context

Nápravník took on Russian citizenship in 1874 and was elevated to the nobility in 1888 by Grand Duke Konstantin Nikolayevich.
