Alberto Nepomuceno was a herald of Brazilian musical nationalism, being one of the first to systematically use Brazilian folklore in his compositions.

Composer Biography

Alberto Nepomuceno, a central figure in Brazilian music, studied in Europe for seven years, traveling to Rome, Berlin, Vienna, and Paris.

Compositional Technique

In his Série Brasileira, Nepomuceno included a reco-reco, a popular instrument similar to the güiro, in the percussion section for the first time, which angered some critics.

Performer Biography

Fabio Mechetti, the conductor on this recording, was the first Brazilian to become director of an Asian orchestra when he was appointed principal conductor of the Malaysian Philharmonic Orchestra.

Recording & Production

Most works recorded for "The Music of Brazil" series have never been available outside Brazil, and many will be world premiere recordings.

Composer's Artistic Vision

Nepomuceno was inspired by Edvard Grieg, a composer with whom he developed a lasting friendship, to seek the creation of a Brazilian musical heritage.
