Composer's Artistic Vision

Pehr Henrik Nordgren's Violin Concerto No. 2 begins with the note F, which he perceived as having mystical overtones after reading about a "basic sound of nature" being the note F.

Composer Biography

Leif Segerstam, a prolific composer, studied violin and conducting at the Sibelius Academy and the Juilliard School of Music, and has conducted his own music worldwide.

Pehr Henrik Nordgren consciously tried to simplify his style, and his Violin Concerto No. 2 reflects this by mostly lacking virtuosic elements, focusing instead on the relationships between notes.

Composition History

Leif Segerstam's "A Last Melodioso" in the version for solo violin and orchestra was written specifically for this BIS recording during Christmas 1985.

Compositional Technique

Pehr Henrik Nordgren's Violin Concerto No. 2 is written in a single movement, following a basic form of something being born, growing, developing, and finally dying away.

Performer Biography

Hannele Segerstam, the dedicatee and first performer of "A Last Melodioso," won first prize in the Kuopio Violin Competition and the Harriet Cohen Medal in 1967.

Composition History

Erik Bergman's Concert for Violin and Orchestra was commissioned by the Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz for the Rheinland-Pfalz Music Days in 1984.
