Composer Biography

Feliks Nowowiejski, the composer, was a native of Warmia, a region that was part of the German Empire until 1918, making him a subject of Emperor Wilhelm II.

Composition History

Nowowiejski's Third Symphony, Op. 53, was mistakenly known as the "Białowieża Symphony" for a long time, but its true subtitle is "The Seven Colours of Iris."

Performer Biography

Łukasz Borowicz, the conductor, has received several awards, including the Polityka Passport Award in 2008 and the Tansman Prize for outstanding musical personality in 2014.

The cover art features a fragment of Mikhail Larionov's "Rayonist Composition," painted around 1913-14.

This album was recorded at the University Auditorium, the Concert Hall of the Poznań Philharmonic, between August 29 and September 8, 2017.

Composer's Artistic Vision

Nowowiejski's Second Symphony, subtitled "Labour and Rhythm," was inspired by his observations of laborers working to the rhythm of a large drum during a trip to North Africa in 1904, and by Karl Bücher's treatise "Arbeit und Rythmus."

Compositional Technique

Nowowiejski's Second Symphony, Op. 52, is a single-movement work that features a prominent use of percussion instruments like timpani and xylophone, and includes a merry fugue initiated by the strings.
