Willibald Guggenmos, the organist on this recording, began his first position as an organist at the age of ten and has performed in nearly every country in Europe, North and South America, and Asia.
Instruments
The main organ of St. Gallen Cathedral, inaugurated in 1968, is one of the largest mechanical organs in Switzerland, featuring four keyboards and 74 stops.
Composition History
Marcel Dupré's Poème héroïque op.33 was originally composed in 1935 for organ, brass, and percussion for the inauguration of the Verdun Cathedral, which had been destroyed during World War I.
Composer Biography
Tomás Garbizu, a Basque organist and professor at the conservatory in San Sebastián, was known for combining the symphonic style of French organ music with Spanish folkloric elements.
Instruments
Only parts of the Moosbrugger organ case and two valuable stops (Gambe 16' from 1810 and Vox Humana 8' from 1876) were retained from the previous organs in St. Gallen Cathedral.
Interpretation
The concept for this album was to feature organ works on Gregorian themes and to showcase the diverse 'colors' of the St. Gallen Cathedral organ through a selection of Swiss and internationally renowned composers.
