Composer's Artistic Vision

The ballet's scenario is based on the Hieronymus Bosch 1504 painting 'The Garden of Earthly Delights,' with each act and scene title taken directly from sections of the painting.

Composer Biography

Leroy Osmon, the composer, lived and worked in the Mexican state of Veracruz for several years and composed many solo passages with his friends in the Banda Sinfonica Del Gobierno Del Estado in mind.

'The Garden of Earthly Delights' is the first ballet for full symphonic band composed for an internationally-acclaimed dance company in Mexico.

Compositional Technique

Composer Leroy Osmon incorporated existing works into the ballet, including an homage to Ravel and two complete movements from an early piano concerto, alongside new material.

The ballet 'The Garden of Earthly Delights' was composed for the Banda Sinfonica Del Gobierno Del Estado (a symphonic band in Xalapa, Mexico) and the Vera-Danza Company.

Notable Performances

The American premiere of 'The Garden of Earthly Delights' took place on July 13, 2015, at the 16th International Conference of the World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles (WASBE) in San Jose, California.

Following its American premiere, 'The Garden of Earthly Delights' was hailed as 'one of the most significant contributions to wind band literature in the past 100 years.'
