During a four-month European concert tour in 1888, Tchaikovsky met other notable composers like Brahms and Grieg.

Tchaikovsky dedicated his Fifth Symphony to Théodore Avé-Lallement, president of the Hamburg Philharmonic Society, who had expressed dislike for Tchaikovsky's 'bombastic orchestration'.

The premiere of Tchaikovsky's Fifth Symphony in November 1888 was a popular success, but critics and colleagues were not sympathetic.

Tchaikovsky initially doubted the value of his Fifth Symphony, writing that 'There is something repugnant, bogus, and artificial about it,' but later changed his mind.
Performer Biography
The Uppsala Chamber Orchestra, regarded as one of Sweden's finest chamber orchestras, previously released a recording of Drottningholm Music by Johan Helmich Roman that was awarded a gold record in 2002.

Tchaikovsky's Fifth Symphony was composed in just a few months in 1888, ten years after his Fourth Symphony.
Performer Biography
Paul Mägi, the principal conductor of the Uppsala Chamber Orchestra since 2004, is also a professor at the College of Music in Tallinn and a guest professor at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm.
