Else Marie Pade was active in the Danish wartime resistance, was imprisoned by the Gestapo in 1944, and composed songs while in Frøslev prison camp.
Recording & Production
The original version of 'Se det i øjnene' ended with the line 'Hitler is not dead … He lives in Nixon!', but this was cut from a 2002 CD release at Pade's request.
Composition History
Else Marie Pade was commissioned by Danmarks Radio (Danish Broadcasting Corporation) in 1970 to set four poems by Orla Bundgård Povlsen to music for a program series.
Album & Artwork
The EMP Series, a collaboration between Dacapo Records and Edition·S, presents Pade's music in new digital editions, including previously unreleased works discovered after her death.
Composer Biography
Pade was deeply influenced by musique concrète after hearing works by Pierre Schaeffer and Pierre Henry in 1952, leading her to visit Schaeffer in Paris.
Compositional Technique
Pade's musical setting for the poem 'Sang om amerikanerne i Vietnam' uses naturalistic narration and sounds like explosions, fire, and murmuring crowds, processed with heavy tape delay.
