Leopold van der Pals's Concertino for cello was originally conceived for saxophone and string orchestra, written for the internationally renowned saxophonist Sigurd Rascher, who was his former student.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Leopold van der Pals was deeply influenced by Rudolf Steiner's anthroposophy and Goethe's idea of metamorphosis, which he incorporated as a structural basis in his music.
Composer Biography
Leopold van der Pals and his brother Nikolai received piano lessons from Alexander Siloti, who was Sergei Rachmaninoff's cousin and teacher, and a close associate of Tchaikovsky.
Recording & Production
The cello version of the Concertino on this album was completed and re-orchestrated by Tobias van der Pals, as Leopold van der Pals never finished his own cello version.
Performer Biography
Fredrik Burstedt, the conductor, was awarded the prestigious Herbert Blomstedt Prize by the Royal Swedish Academy of Music, given every two years to a promising young conductor.

Tobias van der Pals performs on a Matteo Goffriller cello from Venice, 1693, which previously belonged to his former teacher Johannes Goritzki.
