Ivan Monighetti, one of the cellists, was a pupil of Mstislav Rostropovich at the Moscow Conservatory and won top prizes in international competitions, including the 1974 Tchaikovsky competition.

The Largo for Cello and Orchestra, a fully-fledged concerto, was commissioned by Mstislav Rostropovich, who gave its premiere in Vienna in 2005.

Rafał Kwiatkowski, another cellist, has been regularly invited by Krzysztof Penderecki to perform and record his works since participating in the Polish premiere of Penderecki's Concerto Grosso.
Compositional Technique
Penderecki's 1964 Sonata for Cello and Orchestra is unusually scored for a large orchestra including two bongos, three wood blocks, whip, claves, guiro, and tam-tam.
