In the 'Four City Scenes' cycle, Paul Salerni uses electric guitar and a 'gritty musical language' for songs about Moscow and New York, while acoustic guitar and lyrical lines are used for Paris and Rome.
Instruments
Two different guitars were used for this recording: a 2019 Steven Walter guitar for most tracks and a 1986 Thomas Humphrey 'Millennium' for 'Something Permanent' and 'Ekphrastic Songs'.
Recording & Production
The recording of this album took place over two separate sessions: January 20, 2017, for 'Something Permanent' and 'Ekphrastic Songs,' and September 4-6, 2019, for the other works.
Composer Biography
Paul Salerni, the composer, is the NEH Distinguished Chair in the Humanities and Professor of Music at Lehigh University, and he received his Ph.D. in composition from Harvard.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Paul Salerni's vocal music, including the 'Bad Pets' cycle, has been largely inspired by the poetry of Dana Gioia since the late 1980s.
Compositional Technique
Several pieces on this album, including 'Something Permanent' and 'Ekphrastic Songs,' are 'ekphrastic,' meaning they are poems that react to or describe images.
Performer Biography
The Bowers Fader Duo, consisting of Jessica Bowers and Oren Fader, was formally established after their first collaboration with Paul Salerni in 2016.
