1/7Instruments
The flute spectrum was expanded by using organ pipes for high sounds, reaching the ultrasonic limit, and bottles for low sounds, covering a total range of 7 1/2 octaves.
Compositional Technique
The piece uses an 'al fresco' method, where composition occurs during the recording process, rather than composing first and then recording.
Performer Biography
Erik Drescher, the flutist, specializes in contemporary music and is known for his work with the glissando flute, a normal C-flute with a variable-length headjoint.
Composition History
The project began after flutist Erik Drescher's application for cooperation with Peter Ablinger was rejected in February 2020, and both found themselves with nothing to do due to Covid-19.
Composer's Artistic Vision
The album title, "Against Nature," borrowed from Lorraine Daston's book, is not against nature itself, but against our morally-infused concept of nature that tries to separate it from human-made elements.
Compositional Technique
The rhythmic principle of the entire project was inspired by the 'non-quantifiable regularity' of toad (bombina) rhythms, which was first explored through a concept piece for a speaker saying 'NOW'.
Recording & Production
The recording environment was an improvised 'home office studio' built by Peter Ablinger in his atelier, using borrowed professional microphones and interface from the Academy of the Arts.
