Boris Pigovat, the composer, was born in Odessa and studied at the Gnessin Russian Academy of Music in Moscow before relocating to Israel in 1995.

The world première of The Holocaust Requiem took place in Kiev in 2001, at a memorial event dedicated to the Babi Yar massacres in Ukraine in 1941.
Composition History
Pigovat's Holocaust Requiem was initially conceived for soloists, chorus, orchestra, and speaker, but the composer decided to recast it for orchestra and solo viola to ensure simplicity and directness.
