Mario Pilati, born in Naples in 1903, initially studied at a commercial school to become a bookkeeper, but also taught himself Latin, Greek, and music composition.

Pilati earned his composer's diploma summa cum laude at age nineteen and was called a 'revolutionary' by fellow students due to his natural talent.

Composition History

Pilati's final work, 'Alla culla' (By the Cradle), a melancholy orchestral piece, was completed about three weeks before his death and may have been intended as a 'Berceuse for his own final slumber'.

Recording & Production

The Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra, founded in 1929, has recorded over 140 CDs for Naxos and Marco Polo, including this album.

Pilati died at the young age of 35 from a fatal illness, which contributed to the general neglect of his music outside Italy.

Pilati's music blends neoclassicism, post-impressionism, and modern tendencies, making it difficult to categorize, and his early death prevented a complete overview of his evolving style.

The conductor Adriano, who is mostly self-taught, is known as a specialist in Ottorino Respighi's music and has initiated and recorded a series of fifteen CDs of European film music composers.
