Gipps was outspoken in her opposition to serialism and avant-garde music, finding herself alienated by the dominant critical and academic climate of the early 1970s.
Composer Biography
During World War II, Gipps became a full-time orchestral musician, playing oboe and cor anglais in the City of Birmingham Orchestra.
Performer Biography
Juliana Koch, the oboe and cor anglais player on this album, is the Principal Oboe of the London Symphony Orchestra and was appointed Professor of Oboe at the Royal College of Music in 2018.
Composer Biography
Ruth Gipps (1921-1999), the composer on this album, was a piano prodigy who had a piece she wrote at age seven published after winning second prize at the Brighton Festival.

Gipps demonstrated remarkable versatility by playing cor anglais in the orchestra for the premiere of her First Symphony and then performing as a piano soloist in Glazunov's First Piano Concerto in the same concert.
