Composer Biography
Ignaz Joseph Pleyel, the composer, was a diligent student of Johann Baptist Wanhal and Joseph Haydn, being Haydn's favorite pupil from 1772 to 1777.
Critical Reception
Pleyel's works were performed more frequently in London than those of his mentor, Joseph Haydn, who was 25 years his senior.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Pleyel, despite his own success, publicly praised Joseph Haydn's abilities over his own, stating that 'Haydn is the greater man - he is the father of us all.'
Cultural Impact
During his time in Strasbourg, Pleyel's compositions became so popular across Europe that for a period, "there seemed to be no other composers besides him."
