1/7Album & Artwork
This album, "Poétiques de l'instant Vol.1", is the first part of a two-volume CD project that will feature string quartet masterpieces by Debussy and Ravel.
Compositional Technique
Debussy's String Quartet uses classical forms and the cyclical principle, where a main theme recurs throughout the work, similar to the technique of César Franck.
Composer's Artistic Vision
The album title, "Poétiques de l'instant" (Poetics of the Moment), is a phrase coined by composer and musicologist André Boucourechliev to describe Debussy's approach to musical time.
Composition History
The Sonata for flute, viola, and harp was composed during World War I as part of a larger project of six sonatas, through which Debussy aimed to reconnect with an 18th-century classical ideal of French music out of patriotic fervor.
Recording & Production
The album was recorded at the TAP - Théâtre Auditorium de Poitiers, France, whose auditorium is recognized for having one of the best acoustics in Europe.
Composition History
The two Debussy chamber works on this album, the String Quartet and the Sonata for flute, viola, and harp, were composed at the beginning and end of his career, respectively.
Composition History
Debussy wrote both the music and the texts for his four "Proses lyriques" (Lyrical Proses), which feature intimate moments and almost Wagnerian operatic impulses.
