Composer Biography

Manuel M. Ponce, the composer, showed musical talent at an early age, receiving piano and composition lessons from his sister Josefina at four and composing his first pieces at five.

Ponce's interest in folk music grew throughout his career, leading him to arrange and use popular tunes in his compositions and advocate for the reappraisal of folk music.

Ponce also published works under pseudonyms, such as the Suite in A major under the name Weiss, to allow Segovia to play more of his compositions in a single concert without criticism.

Compositional Technique

Ponce showed great skill in imitating older musical styles like Baroque, Classical, and Romantic in his guitar works, dedicating Sonata Clasica to Fernando Sor and Sonata Romantica to Franz Schubert.

Critical Reception

Segovia considered Ponce's Theme, 20 Variations and Fugue on 'Folie d'Espagne' to be the finest work ever composed for the guitar, despite its technical demands.

A lifelong friendship between Segovia and Ponce began in 1923 in Mexico, resulting in over twenty works for guitar, including sonatas, chamber music, and a concerto.
