1/6Composer's Artistic Vision
For Schnelzer, music creation means seeking a true personal expression rather than striving for "modernistically correct" music.
Compositional Technique
Schnelzer uses a serial rhythmicality in his dances, where a basic pulse is constantly shifted and varied through changes of time signature, creating a disorienting effect.
Composer Biography
Albert Schnelzer, born in 1972, studied composition at the Malmö Academy of Music and the Royal College of Music in London, where he also trained as a conductor.
Compositional Technique
The elegiac character of Schnelzer's melodies is partly created by his use of scale types that connect to Klezmer or Balkan music.
Composition History
Schnelzer's international breakthrough came in 2004 when his work Predatory Dances, commissioned by Radio France, premiered at the Presence Festival in Paris.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Schnelzer's music is strongly physical and often narrative, characterized by energetic rhythm and expressive melody, drawing on dance and song as basic elements.
