Charles Gounod wrote his Symphony no. 1 in D major to console himself after his opera La nonne sanglante was removed from the stage of the Paris Opera.
Composition History
Bizet's Symphony in C major was not published during his lifetime and only came to light in 1932 as part of a bequest from Reynaldo Hahn to the Paris Conservatoire.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Camille Saint-Saëns, at just fifteen, composed his Symphony no. 0 in 1850, at a time when symphonic music was not popular in Paris, with Italian opera dominating the scene.
Performer Biography
Kazuki Yamada, the artistic and musical director of the Orchestre philharmonique de Monte-Carlo, also serves as music director of the Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.
Recording & Production
This album was recorded in two sessions: the Bizet and Gounod works in December 2023, and the Saint-Saëns work in June 2024, both at Monaco's Auditorium Rainier III.

Georges Bizet, the future composer of the opera Carmen, began his Symphony in C major at the age of seventeen, influenced by Gounod's symphony.
