Sergei Prokofiev composed these three piano sonatas (Nos. 6, 7, and 8) during World War II, which was known in Russia as the Great Patriotic War.
Compositional Technique
A 'fate' motif, first heard in the finale of Sonata No. 6, reappears in the first movement of No. 7 and permeates the opening of No. 8, subtly uniting the three works.

Prokofiev conceived the idea of this trilogy of piano sonatas during a holiday in Kislovodsk in the northern Caucasus in 1939.
