Prokofiev's Symphony No. 3 originated from his opera The Fiery Angel, which remained unstaged during his lifetime.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Prokofiev insisted that the musical material for his Symphony No. 3 was purely musical, becoming operatic in the opera and symphonic in the symphony, and disliked it being called 'the symphony of The Fiery Angel'.
