Instruments
Andrea Amati (c. 1505-1577) in Cremona is credited with establishing the fundamental structure of the viola da braccio, which later evolved into the violin.
Composition History
Salomone Rossi's Sinfonia a 5 & a 3 si placet, composed for four instruments that would normally play the upper line, appears to be the oldest known composition for an ensemble of four violins.

The Clematis ensemble, directed by Stéphanie de Failly and Brice Sailly, performs the music on this album.
Historical Context
The Amati family, followed by Guarneri and Stradivari, formed a dynasty of stringed instrument makers, with Brescia becoming the second capital of Italian stringed instrument manufacture.
