Composition History
Schumann's First Symphony, titled 'Spring', was sketched out at a breakneck speed over just four days, inspired by Adolf Böttger's poem Frühlingsgedicht.
Interpretation
Gustav Mahler, a late-Romantic composer and renowned conductor, re-orchestrated Schumann's symphonies in the early 1900s to suit the larger orchestras of his time.
Performer Biography
Marin Alsop, the chief conductor of the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra, was the first and only conductor to receive a MacArthur Fellowship and the first woman to conduct the BBC's Last Night of the Proms.
