Maurice Ravel conceived La Valse as an "apotheosis of the Viennese waltz" but also as an impression of a "fantastic and fatal whirling," composed immediately after World War I.

After emigrating, Sergei Rachmaninov's creative work came to a standstill for nine years, and he composed only six works during his 25 years abroad.
Compositional Technique
Rachmaninov's Third Symphony is monothematic, like his first two symphonies, and its leitmotif is an archaic melodic idiom derived from the Old Russian znamenny chant.

Rachmaninov began working on his Third Symphony in Switzerland in the summer of 1935, at his Villa Senar, named after Sergei and Natalia Rachmaninov.
