1/7Composition History
When Covid-19 forced the cancellation of the 2021 festival, founder Peter Froundjian organized a weekend festival in June 2022, inspired by Charles-Valentin Alkan's 'Six Petits Concerts' from the 1870s.
Historical Context
The 'Rarities of Piano Music at Schloss vor Husum' festival takes place in a castle built in 1577-82 by Duke Adolf I of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf as a temporary residence.
Composer Biography
Alexander Tsfasman, born in Odesa, developed a jazz-inflected style of performance and composition, and was a fellow student of Vladimir Horowitz in Felix Blumenfeld's piano class.
Performer Biography
Matthias Kirschnereit, a pianist living in nearby Hamburg, saved a concert at the festival by stepping in last minute after another performer cancelled.
Compositional Technique
Beethoven's Polonaise in C Major, Op. 89, composed in 1814, has rhythmic echoes of his Triple Concerto and its central section's harmony may have inspired Chopin's 'Heroic' Polonaise.
Album & Artwork
The festival, 'Rarities of Piano Music at Schloss vor Husum', focuses on piano works that are often unknown to the audience or unheard in major cultural venues, but are still aesthetically valuable.
Recording & Production
This album is an annual collection of highlights from the 'Rarities of Piano Music at Schloss vor Husum' festival, which has been released by Danacord since 1987.
