Rautavaara's Piano Concerto No. 3, subtitled 'Gift of Dreams', was commissioned by pianist and conductor Vladimir Ashkenazy, with the specific requirement that the pianist could both play the solo part and conduct the orchestra, as was common in Classical times.

Bohuslav Martinů's Piano Concerto No. 3 was completed on March 10, 1948, the day of the assassination of Jan Masaryk, a Czech diplomat and politician, a detail Martinů noted in his manuscript score.
