Rautavaara's Third Piano Concerto, subtitled 'Gift of Dreams', was written in 1998 for the renowned pianist Vladimir Ashkenazy.
Composition History
The orchestral fantasia 'Isle of Bliss' by Rautavaara was inspired by a poem by Aleksis Kivi, the Finnish national poet, depicting a mythical island paradise.

Einojuhani Rautavaara, the internationally renowned Finnish composer, drew on Nordic classicism, Bartók, Shostakovich, and folk music in his early compositions.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Rautavaara's First Piano Concerto, written in 1969, marked a turning point as he sought to evoke 'the entire rich grandeur of the instrument'.
Recording & Production
This album was recorded at the Netherlands Radio Studios Hilversum from November 12th to 15th, 2002, with Phil Rowlands as producer.
