The 'lost landscapes' in Rautavaara's work refer to places important to him during his student years abroad, which he described as 'musical life themes' full of memories and atmospheres.

This recording of Pelimannit features an original polska tune played on the violin before each piano piece, an idea conceived by Pekka Kuusisto, the violinist.

Einojuhani Rautavaara, the composer, studied at the celebrated Tanglewood summer courses in 1955 and 1956, having been chosen by Sibelius himself.
Performer Biography
Pekka Kuusisto, the violinist on this album, was the first Finn to win the Sibelius Violin Competition in 1995.
Composition History
Rautavaara's piano series Pelimannit (The Fiddlers) was his first work performed in a proper concert and was given opus number 1.
Compositional Technique
The pieces in Rautavaara's Pelimannit are based on traditional Finnish polska tunes for the fiddle, which were notated by Samuel Rinta-Nikkola, a tailor and folk music enthusiast.
Composition History
Rautavaara's Lost Landscapes was a prestigious commission from star violinist Midori and is his only extensive chamber music work for violin.
