This album is the second volume in a project to record all of Antoine Reicha's piano music.
Compositional Technique
The Six Fugues, Op. 81, are organized as a chain where each new fugue shares one tone with the key or closing chord of the preceding fugue.
Composer Biography
Reicha played flute in the electoral orchestra in Bonn alongside a fifteen-year-old Ludwig van Beethoven.
Composer's Artistic Vision
Reicha's piano music is characterized by an innocent mixture of experimental, advanced, didactic, and simple characteristics, avoiding the popular, flashy styles of his contemporaries.
Compositional Technique
Reicha wrote over 60 fugues/fugatos for solo piano, a number far exceeding his contemporaries like Clementi, Mozart, and Beethoven.

Reicha used performing instructions sparingly, believing that the great merit in performance was to feel and divine the composer's intentions, for which no signs exist.
Composer Biography
Antoine Reicha (1770-1836), the composer, was born in Prague and orphaned at ten months old, leading him to flee to his grandfather and then his uncle Josef, who taught him music.
